C-SPAN's tweet saying the Senate confirmed Keith Sonderling of Florida as Secretary of Labor, 47-41, is false.
The network posted the line on X with a link. Official Senate roll call records (Vote No. 119, March 12, 2025) and Congress.gov show Sonderling was confirmed as Deputy Secretary of Labor, by a vote of 53-46, with one senator not voting.
Wrong job. Wrong count.
The vote itself was real. A C-SPAN broadcast image shows the Senate chamber during a floor session, with an on-screen graphic reading "Nomination of Keith Sonderling, of Florida, to be Secretary of Labor." The graphic lists the current tally at 47 yeas and 41 nays, meaning the vote was still underway when that frame aired.
The records tell a different story about the final result. The cloture vote on the nomination was 53-45, and the confirmation vote landed at 53-46. Neither number is 47-41.
So the tweet turned a running tally into a final one and carried the wrong title along with it. You can see the gap for yourself: the graphic says one thing, the roll call says another.
The record is public, and it says Deputy Secretary of Labor, 53-46.
