Berlin police shot dead Abdul Balut, the suspect in the city's Pride attack, after he charged at special forces officers wielding a stabbing weapon in a Spandau garden complex, authorities said during a live broadcast on France 24 English.
Balut was accused of killing one woman and injuring 29 others in the attack, which targeted a Pride parade in Berlin. The anchor reported that police located Balut in an allotment garden complex in Spandau, where he rushed toward special forces officers before police opened fire.
Berlin police issued a statement confirming the sequence of events. "The suspect ran towards the officers while armed with a weapon, prompting the police to use their firearms," the statement said. "As a result of the shooting, the suspect sustained severe injuries. An emergency doctor attempted resuscitation, but he died at the scene. We are now proceeding with the investigation."

Earlier in the broadcast, the anchor reported that Balut was suspected of driving a van into a crowd and attacking people with a machete. Three of the 29 injured sustained life-threatening injuries. The attack took place in Berlin's Tiergarten, roughly seven kilometers from the Spandau garden complex where Balut was later found and shot dead.
The anchor noted that many commentators had expected the manhunt to end with the suspect's death.
